About
I am grateful for the valuable experience of working as an elementary teacher in public schools, teaching private piano and flute students, and teaching at the university level as a flute instructor. It has been a pleasure working with students of all ages, directing small ensembles and flute choirs, and preparing students for concerts, recitals, contests, and festivals.
Lessons
Before enrolling a new student, I like to have an interview with the prospective student and their parents. This can be an in-person interview or through a video call. It gives me a chance to become acquainted with the student and learn about their interest in music and their previous music study. And it gives the student and their parents an opportunity to find out more about my method of teaching and policies.
This meeting is free and there is no obligation to enroll. We can discuss scheduling of your lessons at that time, also. Each lesson will be at the same time once a week.
Local piano and flute students will have in-person lessons at my studio. Long distance piano students may have their lessons online. Every student will need to have an instrument in good playing condition.
For online piano lessons, a good internet connection is necessary. And you need a device such as a tablet or laptop with Wi-Fi connection, a computer with a camera, or a smart phone. Lessons will be on video calls using Zoom, Skype, or Google Meet.
I will let you know what method books, music, and other learning materials are needed and where you can buy them. Online students may pay through PayPal or another prearranged online payment.
Please message me to find out more about current tuition rate and policy.
Goals
I aim for high but realistic goals for every student. I want to embolden each student with confidence by consistently reinforcing and praising their accomplishments.
I strive to create lessons that are well balanced including pieces of various styles and lessons in technique, theory, ear training, performance, and music history. There are opportunities to perform at masterclasses, recitals, auditions, and festivals.
For local students, thirty-minute lessons for beginners and forty-five minute lessons for advanced students are offered once a week. On-line students will need a forty-five minute lesson once a week. The student will have assigned pieces which they have been practicing and I will give feedback about what is going well, what needs more work, give instruction about how to practice, and discuss with the student their short and long term goals.
These goals for practice will be notated on the free app, Tonara. The student and I will be able to communicate with each other throughout the week using the app. The student will be able to set goals for practicing and keep track of their practice throughout the week.
My ultimate goal for my students is that the they will develop their own lifelong love of music!
